Chiara and Niamh Kavanagh meet the press

Posted: January 2, 2011 by eurovisiontimes in Ireland, Malta, Romania

Romania - They both were judges on the Romanian national final and helped choose Hotel FM as the Romanian representative. A day before the final Niamh Kavanagh (Ireland 1993, 2010) and Chiara (Malta 1998, 2004, 2009) took some time to talk to the press. They talked about leaving their families alone on New Years Eve, their new musical projects, the change of the Eurovision Song Contest and the Romanian national final. Chiara revealed that she had initially planned to enter the Maltese selection again in 2011, but the rules published by PBS prevented her from doing that. PBS decided to block the three last Eurovision entrants for three years (among them Chiara). Chiara said she didn’t like these rules as a song which is perfect now might not be perfect in three years.

Here you can see videos of the full half hour interview:

Two fantastic ladies, in fact probably my two favourite ESC artists for interviews. If only their songs had been as good as their interviews … If they come back in the future, I hope that they will have caught up with today’s world by then … at least in music.

I watched the interview which gave Niamh and Chiara a chance to show us how charming they can be. They also made wise remarks about the ‘one singer sings a few songs and one is selected’ format. It reminded me of what happened in the Georgian 2010 NF. Everyone knew which song Sophia wanted to win after she sang those five songs. The same happened in Israel. What will happen in the Dutch 2011 NF? The band wrote all the songs if if I’m not mistaken and I wonder if one will be able to tell if they are leaning towards one of them.

Leaning? Those songs will be her limbs. :p

  4. i agree with togravus, at least these two women can sing, thank god
and they’re not afraid of a standing performance too

they should definitely twist it all with actual amazing music and they’ll do the trick

  5. BTW the romanian interviewer is so funny ;) I laughed my *** off when he said “for promotion?” and Chiara corrected him ;) Also Niamh seemed very impatient for him to complete his sentences…

What I really like about those two in interviews is that they are never stiff and do not sound as if they just spit out previously rehearsed phrases. Most inteviews with ESC singers are terribly dull (“it is such an honour … fantastic time … love you all … thank you for etc.” Just remember Safura’s interviews which were as rehearsed and over-choreographed as her ESC performance.) Chiara and Niahm always know how to create a cosy ESC family atmosphere. In fact, it is a bit like listening to your aunt or cousin sitting on the sofa after a Sunday family dinner. :)

Oh, and I forgot to say that I absolutely adore Chiara’s accent. I love Maltese English and tried to acquire the island’s accent while living there. Unfortunately, the horrid Essex accent that befell me in my London days still dominates my spoken English …

  8. Luis USA says:

I’d like to hear you guys speak. :p

I have my own youtube channel which talks about Eurovision sometimes, if you guys want to watch my videos let me know. :)

  9. Luis USA says:

http://www.youtube.com/luludrops random stuff with the occasional Eurovision topic :) Videos 1, 2, and 5 talk about the contest.

  10. Luis USA says:

    Yay :)

Yes, webstreams is what I used for 2007 and 2008. Now for the last 2 years I’ve had my ritual of making sure I have TVEInternational in my programming, recording the night before, and staying away from the computer until I’ve seen it (this last part kills me because I like to just relax and listen to music while I catch up with friends, but I know the results will be posted everywhere so I must do this). Are you ever coming back to the US? :)
